Lose Fat Eating One Meal A Day

Losing weight or more properly losing fat eating one meal a day is a strategy I’ve recently adopted.

Update: Since I first started this site I’ve had a few tries to lose weight eating one meal a day. And they all failed until I tried again in 2011. By January 2012 I had lost 30lbs on the diet and I’m currently on my way to getting a flat stomach for the first time in twenty years.

Here’s are some recent pictures:

Back to the diet:

It sounds pretty extreme and I suppose in some ways it is.

The idea came to me after I finally came to the conclusion that I could do without breakfast.

Missing out breakfast was something I’ve done on and off over the years. It was never a deliberate decision it was just something that happened.

Within the last month I’ve extended the idea to missing out on lunch and just eating one main meal in the evening.

It’s something of an experiment but it’s showing great promise.

I find that the earlier in the day I start eating, the more I eat, so delaying my eating until the early evening seemed to make sense.

I should stress that this is not a long term lifestyle change I’m looking to make. This is a short term strategy aimed at creating a calorie deficit to help me lose weight.

Over a seven day period I’ll spend the first three days eating one main meal a day. Over the next two I’ll eat two main meals at or slightly below a maintenance intake.

For the final two days I’ll take a relaxed attitude to eating and whilst I’ll aim to consume somewhere around maintenance I won’t get flustered if I don’t. In fact I think there are some benefits to eating big sometimes – if only psychological.

I should clarify that I’m not doing any strenuous exercise other than brisk walking once or twice a day for 30 to 40 minutes.

I should also clarify that I eat fruit or vegetables if I get very hungry, but at best these intakes can be described as snacks (not meals) somewhere between 100 and 150 calories.

Other than water, my beverage of choice is tea, with whole milk and sugar.

Having made this disclosure about the extras you can perhaps see that I’m not leading a lifestyle of total abstinence. There’s a fairly regular intake of calories throughout the day but there’s only one (or two) main meals.

I aim to use this approach to get me to my goal weight of 173lbs or until I see six pack abs or a flat stomach.

Thereafter I’ll use it to maintain and keep the weight off. Thinking ahead to the future I’d like to be in a position where I’m always within four weeks of a six pack (if that makes any sense?). I want to lead a normal lifestyle and eat pretty much what I want to eat and I believe it’s possible – after all, for well over a decade I’ve managed to maintain at 30lbs over weight, so I see no reason why I can’t maintain at my goal weight.

Having said all of this, my problem over the last two days has been my sabotaging my efforts in the evening. I find myself snacking while watching TV. It seems a shame to go a whole day sticking to the plan only to abandon it right at the end.

I’m certain I’m still eating at a calorie deficit but without doubt I’m slowing my progress. The reason for eating one meal per day for only 3 days a week is so I can find the self discipline to do it.

I’ve done it before and I can do it again.

I Got Out Of Bed At 5am To Go Running

Hi, Fit Dad here,

Just a quick update. I’m trying to get into the habit of waking earlier in the morning so that I can get my exercise in first thing. That way it’s done and it doesn’t allow me to procrastinate. It also minimises the chances of other random events preventing me from exercising.

It’s an approach I’ve tried before and it worked well for me, it really helped me to lose weight, but I have to be honest, it’s a real pig getting out of bed at 5am.

I managed a 30 minute cross country run today. I put in a little more distance this time but I didn’t push very hard today as my legs and feet were a little sore.

Having done the exercise so early in the day I also feel I have something to protect in terms of what I allow myself to eat. Having bothered to get out of bed so early I don’t want to negate that feat of will-power by over eating.

Waking at 5am sounds like a drastic measure but I want to Lose The Fat and I know I have to make sacrifices to to it.

The alarm is set for 5am tomorrow too!

I’ll be back later with weights, measurements and a picture.

Be healthy!

Three Days Away From Fitness Training

Hi,

I went running today (Friday). It was good run (or at least it felt good). It was the same distance as the other cross country runs I’ve been doing lately but I was more determined. I pushed harder, I was breathing harder and I felt compelled to push myself to go faster.

I wonder if this is as a result of having three days away from fitness?

I hadn’t intended to have a break of three days but a combination of circumstances resulted in me having three days off.

I don’t really feel too bad about it either. Had the break stretched to four days I might have viewed it differently.

I’m not going to beat myself up about it, but I do want to make sure that I don’t keep doing that. I want to do some exercise most days, even if it s just moderate exercise.

I didn’t manage to get in a couple of 40 minute runs as I’d planned but I hope I have found a means to get those longer runs done. I’m going to run earlier in the morning to make sure I get it done before the chaos of everyday takes over.

I haven;t weighed myself but I’m guessing I still have to drop 30lbs. Fair enough, I mean, my emphasis has been on getting the exercise in and reconditioning myself after a long lay off.

I will lose the fat – the fat loss will happen… and sooner rather than later.

I’ll weigh, measure and take a picture tomorrow.

Be healthy!

I Don’t Want To Still Be 30lbs Overweight In Three Months Time

Hi,

It’s going well.

I managed another twenty minute cross country run yesterday (Sunday) and this evening I ran a mile and a half on the road. I didn’t time the road run but it was probably around the 12 minute mark (fairly slow). Many moons ago when I was in better shape I ran the same distance in just over 10 minutes (which is probably still fairly slow – to some at least).

I’ve been more conscious of my eating today and I’ve avoided over indulging. It’s a hard habit to break but as I start to improve with the exercise I feel I have something to protect now.

In the back of my mind I keep the idea that I don’t want to still be 30lbs overweight in three months time. It could easily happen, after all, it’s happened plety of times before.

Three months is plenty enough to lose 30lbs of fat and I intend to make it happen.

I’ll take a day off from running tomorrow as I’ve made three runs in a row.

Eventually I’d like to be able to run a mile and a half almost everyday as a warm up or just for a break from the stress of everyday living. But for now, I want to break myself in fairly gently and avoid injury.

Next week I’ll try for a couple of longer runs, somewhere in the 40 minute region!

Be healthy!

Lose The Fat 3

Hi, Fit Dad here,

In my last update I mentioned that I’d made a return to fitness training. I put in two twenty minute cross country runs and a day off. Yesterday (Saturday) I put in another twenty minute cross country run and feel pleased that I’m building a new exercise habit. OK so I have a little way to go before I can call it a habit but I’m keen to celebrate my early success – it makes me feel more like sticking with it.

I weighed myself yesterday and I’m 202lbs. It’s no surprise really, I haven’t been too conscious of my eating lately. I’m much more interested in the exercise right now. The dietary aspect will come shortly, once I feel I’m hooked into the exercise.

fitdaddotnet_belly_17052009

I measured myself today:

Chest: 42
Belly: 40.5
Waist: 38.5
Hips: 40.25
Right Upper Arm: 13.25
Right U A Flexed: 14.25
Left Upper Arm: 13.25
Left U A Flexed: 14.25
Right Thigh: 23
Left Thigh: 23

The summer is coming, I’m free of cold, free of injury and I want to lose the fat around my stomach by the middle of August.

I’ll be supplementing the running with other exercises and mini challenges but I’ll go into that in more detail in the coming weeks.

Be healthy!

A Return To Fitness Training

Hi,

I’ve been away from my blog for a little while but that’s because I had nothing to report. I had a false re-start after my cold. I managed to injure myself doing nothing in particular.

I didn’t want to post anything until I’d started exercising again. I get fed up talking about stuff I’m not doing. Over the last two days I’ve managed to get in one twenty-minute cross country run each day.

The pace was reasonable considering I haven’t been running since just before Christmas.

I can start thinking about improving my fitness again and that’s very pleasing!

I’ll probably have a day away from running tomorrow and return to it again on Saturday.

Be healthy!

Zuzana Rocks

A while ago a found a site called Body Rock TV hosted by an amazingly fit lady called Zuzana. One of the most recent videos showed Zuzana doing an exercise that caught my attention because it’s something that can be done at home without special equipment.

Whilst I wouldn’t want to base my entire fitness program around this type of thing I recognise that it would be fun to drop this and exercises like this into my program every now and then just to change things up.

Here’s the video:

By way of a brief update, I’ve had a day off from exercise today, save for a long walk with the dogs (but to be honest that’s fairly routine). After three runs in three days my legs felt like lead this morning – so a day off should do wonders!

I’ll run again tomorrow!

Be healthy!

Lose The Fat 1

fitdaddotnet_belly_18042009

Hi,

Here’s the picture of the belly I’ve been promising.

Sorry, it’s not a great photo but you get the idea. It was taken on a phone camera and it was my intention for the pic not to give away my identity. I want to blog about my fitness anonymously. That might change somewhere down the line but for now I’m more comfortable doing it this way.

I’ll take a pic like this each week for comparison. Right now I just want to lose the fat while maintaining muscle. I’m not actively seeking to gain muscle even though I know the benefits of doing so. I guess everyone feels the need to do it their own way?

The title of the post reflects my attitude towards this. I feel I work better at achieving my goals when I give myself instructions. Like the fat loss mantra I’ve been using, it works its way into my unconcious.

That said, I also recognise that I could use postitive language. I’ll get to that later.

So there it is – 201lbs. About 31lbs (best guess) overweight. Love handles and belly are not attractive but a flat stomach is. That’s where I’m going.

Starting Weight 201lbs. Now LOSE THE FAT!

Hi,

Yesterday (Friday) I weighed in at 200.8lbs and today the scales tell me I’m 200.6lbs. Over the six days I’ve been weighing, the average weight is 200.8lbs so I’m going to round it up to 201lbs.

201lbs is my starting weight, so I estimate I have to lose the fat to the tune of 31lbs.

I had intended to post the picture today but I’m having trouble uploading it. Sorry. I’ll try again tomorrow.

My Fat Loss Mantra: Lose The Fat, Lose The Fat, Lose The Fat! I think it’s helping.

A Great Fitness Site From Zuzana

Hi,

The weight today: 202.2

The highest figure so far this week!

My cold really does seem to be going. I feel a whole lot better but not quite as good as I need to feel to lose the fat through exercise.

I’ve started to get some brisk walks in during the day, 20 minutes here, 30 minutes there. The walking is designed to break me into the running later on when I’m free of the cold.

In the meantime I have of course been trawling the internet for interesting fitness sites and I’ve found one called BodyRock.TV, 20 Minute Cardio 1: The best cardio workout.

Much of what the host Zuzana seems to cover is the sort of thing you can do at home without masses of gym equipment.

The eating is getting better as every time I get ready to eat something I’m repeating my little fat loss mantra:

Be healthy!

I Drank Beer And Ate Sugar Dense Foods

Hi,

I weighed myself yesterday (Tuesday) and tipped the scale at 198.8lbs. That’s a loss from Monday’s weight of 200.6 but it’s more likely to be fluid loss than fat loss. As if to prove the point I weighed myself again this morning and registered 201.8

My diet is still fairly appalling – more in terms of the quantity I’m eating than the quality.

Monday was a family celebration so I drank beer and ate sugar dense foods.

I know that if I want to lose the fat I need to control my diet much more than I’ve bothered to do recently. I’ll come back to this aspect soon enough.

Don’t forget, I’m relying on my fat loss mantra:

BTW I haven’t forgotten I said I’d post a picture – and I will.

Be healthy!
